Chiefly personal correspondence, 1973-1976, of J. Rives Childs, diplomat, writer, former ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Ethiopia, and scholar of Casanova. Topics include the Middle East, Casanova scholarship, Randolph-Macon College, particularly its exchange program with the University of Nice, Rives family genealogy, and cryptology. Correspondence include letters to congressmen and editors and materials concerning publication of books and articles by Childs. Much of the correspondence covers Childs's 1975 trip to Russia; also included is travel information from his Russian tour, programs, invitations, clippings, genealogical material, and some bills and receipts.

James Rives Childs was born February 6, 1893 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He attended the Virginia Military Institute before graduating from Randolph-Macon College in 1912, then earned a master of arts from Harvard University in 1915. He served the United States Army during World War I as a cryptoanalyst and radio intelligence liaison in France.
